20p Roulette: How Britain's Favourite Wheel Works

Published October 2026

20p Roulette is a computer-generated European roulette wheel made by Inspired Gaming, and the title tells you its main selling point: each chip on the layout can be as small as twenty pence. In Britain it is one of the most searched roulette games online. Outside the UK, very few players have heard of it.

From betting shop terminal to browser

Inspired built its business supplying the fixed odds betting terminals found in high street bookmakers. Those machines needed a roulette game that encouraged lots of small chips spread across the table rather than a couple of big ones, and 20p Roulette fitted the brief. It became a fixture in betting shops across the country.

When online casinos started carrying Inspired's catalogue, the game moved across with very little change. The touchscreen layout, the chip sizes and the pace all come from the shop terminal, which is why it feels different from a roulette table designed for the web from day one. That history also explains why the search interest is so concentrated in the UK.

The numbers behind the wheel

RTP97.30%

Under the interface this is standard European roulette. With one zero on a 37-pocket wheel, the house keeps 2.70% of stakes over time and returns 97.30%. That beats nearly every slot, and it matches any other single-zero wheel exactly.

The difference is how finely you can spread your money. Because each position only needs 20p, twenty separate chips cost £4. At a live wheel with £1 chips, those twenty positions would cost £20.

Why a small chip can cost more per hour

The 20p chip makes each spin feel cheap. It is worth separating that feeling from what the game actually costs.

The house edge works on total amount staked, regardless of how it is split across chips. Twenty 20p bets is £4 staked, the same as a single £4 bet, and the expected cost of that spin is the same: about 11p at 2.70%.

What the format changes is behaviour. Small chips make it easy to cover lots of numbers, and a computer wheel spins quickly. Put those together and the amount staked per hour can run well beyond what the same player would stake at a slower live table. The price per pound is low; the number of pounds passing through can be high.

Worked example. £4 spread over the layout each spin, with a spin every 20 seconds, means £720 staked in an hour. At a 2.70% edge, that hour has an expected cost of roughly £19, on a game whose chips are 20p each.

Every row uses the same wheel and the same 97.30% RTP. The only thing changing is how much passes through the game, and that is set by how many chips you place and how quickly you press spin. Small chips nudge both upwards without it being obvious.

The 2019 terminal cut and the rules online today

In April 2019 the government lowered the top stake on betting shop terminals from £100 to £2 a spin, after years of pressure over the link between those machines and gambling harm. Shop numbers fell sharply afterwards, and terminal roulette lost much of its commercial weight.

Online, the UK stake limits that followed apply to slots, not table games: a £5 ceiling per spin from age 25, and £2 below that age. Online roulette sits outside that cap, though deposit limits and affordability checks still apply to UK accounts.

Sites licensed outside the UK are not bound by any of this, so the same Inspired and Evolution roulette games often appear there with much higher table limits. Our roulette not on GamStop page lists the sites and their limits. If you joined GamStop because gambling had become a problem, leave the exclusion in place. The multiplier games deserve a closer look. Lightning and Quantum pay for their big multipliers by cutting the standard single-number payout from 35 to 1 down to 29 to 1. The overall edge ends up near a normal wheel, but results swing far more widely. They share a name with roulette and behave like a higher-variance game.

20p Roulette demo and free play

Free play versions of 20p Roulette are easy to find and run the same wheel, odds and random number generator as the paid game. They are a good way to learn the layout, the bet names and how payouts are calculated before staking anything.

What free play cannot show you is how you act once real money is on the layout, and that is the part that decides most outcomes. Use the demo to learn the rules; do not treat a good free session as evidence the paid game will go the same way. Our guide to demo modes covers this in more detail.

How it compares with slots and French roulette

Against slots, 20p Roulette is the cheaper option per pound staked. A 2.70% edge against a typical slot's 4% or so is about a third less cost for each pound, which adds up over a year of play.

That advantage only holds if you are not making up for it with volume. A fast wheel with wide coverage can easily put more money through in an hour than a slot played at £2 a spin, and the edge applies to all of it.

If a French roulette table is on offer, it is the better choice again. Its la partage rule returns half of an even-money stake when the ball lands on zero, cutting the edge on those bets from 2.70% to 1.35%. French tables turn up more often in offshore lobbies that carry Evolution's full range; the roulette page lists where.
