Maxxed is our first pick for slots not on GamStop. You get a 5,000+ game lobby plus 15+ provably fair Maxxed Originals, deposits in BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL or LTC, and a choice of three welcome packs (free spins, a free bet or cashback) with no wagering and seven days to use them.
The UK stake cap is what sends most British slot players looking elsewhere, and it is widely misquoted. It covers online slots and nothing else, it depends on your age, and it is not a single £2 figure.
The bigger change is in the game build. Offshore copies of a slot still let you buy features, use turbo and play the full-volatility maths that UK versions lost, and the casino does not have to tell you which RTP version it has loaded.

The UK slot cap in plain numbers
The stake limit is the main reason British players search for slots outside GamStop, and much of what is written about it gets the detail wrong.
It covers online slots and nothing else. Roulette, live dealer games, instant wins and sports betting are limited instead by the operator's own maximums and by affordability checks. If slots are not your game, the cap never affected you.
It also has two levels. The limits came in during 2025 and vary by age, which is why you see both £2 and £5 quoted.
| Game and player | Highest stake per spin | Applies at |
|---|---|---|
| Online slots, aged 25 or older | £5 | UK-licensed casinos |
| Online slots, aged 18 to 24 | £2 | UK-licensed casinos |
| Roulette, live games, instant wins | No legal cap | UK-licensed casinos |
| Online slots | No legal cap, set by each game | Offshore casinos |
What a larger stake changes. The RTP stays the same whatever you bet. The size of each swing grows, and a bankroll reaches its result sooner: at £5 a spin you get through the maths five times faster than at £1. Try it first in the bankroll simulator.
Features the 2021 rules took out of UK slots
The Gambling Commission's 2021 slot changes altered how games are presented, not what they pay, and offshore casinos never adopted them. Three are real restrictions. One was in your favour, and you give it up by leaving.
Buying the bonus
A feature buy lets you pay a set multiple of your stake to go straight into the bonus round. UK-licensed sites have not offered it since 2021. Offshore it is normal, usually at about 75 to 100 times stake.
Being able to buy it does not make it good value. For a 100× purchase to be worth it, the bonus must average above 100× stake, and studios usually price the buy a little worse than the base game. Our bonus buy guide runs the numbers.
Speed: autoplay, turbo and the 2.5-second minimum
A UK slot spin must last at least two and a half seconds, and you must start each spin yourself. Autoplay, turbo and hold-to-spin are all off.
Offshore they are back on, and this has the largest effect on money per hour. At 2.5 seconds you get roughly 1,440 spins an hour; with turbo and autoplay you can more than double that. The edge per spin is unchanged, but you pay it twice as often.
Celebrating losses
On a UK build, a spin that pays back your stake or less cannot trigger win sounds or animations: a 40p return on a £1 spin is shown quietly. Offshore builds still celebrate it.
It looks like a detail. In practice nothing else in the game does more to disguise a losing session as a good one, and that is why it was removed.
Reversible withdrawals, the one to miss
British sites stopped offering this years ago. Offshore it is widespread: a requested cash-out waits in a pending state, often for a day or more, and one click returns it to your balance.
The feature is there so you cancel. If you take a single precaution from this page, withdraw to an address that is awkward to reach, and see a quick payout as something that protects you.
Why two copies of one slot can pay differently
This costs slot players more than anything else on the page and has nothing to do with GamStop.
Studios certify popular games at several RTP levels and let the casino choose. Pragmatic Play, Blueprint and Barcrest all work this way. The game looks identical in every lobby, with the same art, features and name, and the only visible difference is on the final page of the paytable.
Rainbow Riches Megaways from Barcrest is the best-documented case. Its published RTP ranges from 94.3% to 96.00% depending on the version, and UK sources quote different points on that range because each one checked a different build.
UK-licensed casinos have to display the RTP of the version they run. Offshore casinos do not. That does not mean they run the low versions. It means you check instead of assuming, and checking takes a few seconds.
The gap over a session. £2 a spin for 2,500 spins is £5,000 staked. At 96.00% you would expect to lose about £200; at 94.3% about £285. That is £85 on the same game, set by a version you were never told about. The RTP cost calculator works this out for any stake, and the RTP guide shows where to find the number in a game.
Volatility, bankroll and the cap
RTP is an average over millions of spins. Volatility tells you what a few hundred spins will probably look like, and it is the better guide to your evening.
Two slots at 96% can feel nothing alike. A low-volatility game pays small amounts often and loses ground gradually. A high-volatility game can pay very little for a long time and then deliver most of its return in one rare feature. The expected cost is the same; the difference is whether a small bankroll lasts long enough to see the average.
Studios rarely publish volatility as a figure, so use stand-ins. The maximum win is the most useful: a game capped at 500× your stake behaves very differently from one with a 50,000× ceiling, even at matching RTPs. Hit frequency, where published, is the other.
This is the fair version of the offshore argument. A high-volatility slot needs many spins to reach its feature, and capping the stake leaves you in the quiet stretch for longer without changing the odds. Our volatility guide explains the shapes, and you can run one through the bankroll simulator.
Judging a slot lobby by more than its game count
Every casino quotes a game total, and it is worth discounting before you use it to compare two sites.
The total usually counts duplicate versions, scratch cards, RNG table games, instant wins and whole back catalogues from a few aggregators. A slot player needs a smaller number: how many separate studios are present, and whether yours are among them.
Two thousand games from the twelve studios you play beat nine thousand games of filler. Use the provider filter rather than scrolling; the length of that list tells you more in a few seconds than the total ever will.
- Look for your studios by name. If the maker of your favourite game is missing, the total does not matter. That is why we have studio pages for Pragmatic Play, Blueprint, NetEnt and Evolution Gaming.
- Check the format you want. Megaways slots come from many licensed studios, so a deep Megaways list is a decent sign of a deep lobby.
- Play the demo first. Most offshore lobbies allow it without signing up; see free slot demos. It cannot show the odds, but it shows whether the lobby matches the homepage.
The price of leaving UK protections
Slots are where the offshore case is strongest: no stake cap, feature buys and full-volatility builds are all real. They are also where the protections you leave behind were written with this exact game in mind, and offshore you will play it quicker and for more.
- The 2021 changes come back as a set. You cannot keep the higher stake and refuse autoplay, turbo, loss celebrations and reversible withdrawals.
- GamStop does not cover these casinos. How GamStop works explains the scheme. If you registered because gambling had become a problem, leave the exclusion in place; GamCare offers free support on 0808 8020 133.
- No approved dispute service. UK operators answer to an ADR body and the Commission. Offshore, a complaint ends with the licensing authority, and how helpful that is depends a lot on which licence it is.
- The RTP version is undisclosed. Offshore casinos need not say which build they run, so the paytable check becomes essential.
- Verification arrives at cash-out. Read KYC at offshore casinos beforehand. If a site's terms exclude your country, read using a VPN offshore, because most terms let the operator withhold winnings from VPN users.
Before you fund an account
- Open each slot you plan to play and read the RTP from the paytable's last page.
- Note the maximum win and use it to judge volatility, not as a target.
- If a feature buy is offered, divide its price by your stake. A result between 75 and 100 is the studio norm; much higher is the casino's choice.
- Filter by provider and confirm your studios are there.
- Find the withdrawal page and see whether pending cash-outs can be reversed.
- Read the operator's review and our rating method before depositing.
