Maxxed is our first pick for Megaways players. It runs a 5,000+ game lobby, takes BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL and LTC, and lets you pick one of three welcome packs with no wagering attached. Use the provider filter to confirm the Megaways studios you play are listed before you deposit.
Every Megaways game runs on an engine Big Time Gaming created and rents out to other studios. Each spin redraws how many symbols sit on every reel, and on the standard six-reel grid the top of that range is 117,649 ways to pay.
For a UK player the interesting part is what surrounds the engine. A British lobby and an offshore lobby can load the identical title, yet only the offshore one lets you buy the feature, stake above the UK cap or switch on autoplay.

One engine, dozens of studios
Big Time Gaming owns the Megaways mechanic and licenses it out. Pragmatic Play, Blueprint, Barcrest, Inspired and Red Tiger all build on it, which explains why the same reel behaviour appears under so many logos in a lobby.
On each spin every reel shows somewhere between two and seven symbols. Multiply the six reel heights together and you get the number of ways that spin can pay. All six reels at seven high gives 117,649, but that is the rare top case and the typical spin lands well below it.
When a combination pays, its symbols vanish and the ones above drop into the space. This cascade repeats until nothing new lines up, so one paid spin can keep paying. In the free spins round most titles attach a multiplier that climbs with each cascade and holds until the round finishes. That multiplier is where the advertised maximum wins come from, and it is the reason the base game can feel thin. Our Megaways explainer goes through the reel maths in more depth.
Ways describe the grid, RTP describes the return. A Megaways slot and a classic ten-line slot can pay back the same percentage. Starburst holds 96.09% across ten lines with a 500× ceiling, which is a similar return delivered in a very different pattern. A higher ways count generally means smaller typical wins and a longer tail.
What a British lobby switches off
The Gambling Commission's online slot rules apply to every slot in a UK lobby. Three of them change Megaways more than any other format, because Megaways is built around long quiet stretches and a rare, heavy feature.
The stake cap
UK-licensed slots are limited to £5 a spin for players aged 25 or over and £2 a spin for those aged 18 to 24, the same limits that cover all slots at UK sites. On a Megaways game the cap leaves the volatility untouched. You simply spend longer in the flat part of the game on a given bankroll. Offshore sites do not apply the cap, and that is the reason most UK players give for looking.
No feature buy
British sites removed the option to pay for direct entry to the bonus round. Megaways is the format players bought into most, since the whole design rewards skipping the base game. Offshore the buy usually costs 75 to 100 times your stake. Being allowed to buy is a separate matter from the buy being good value. For a 100× purchase to pay off, the bonus it buys would need to average above 100× your stake, and most fall a little short.
Manual spins and the speed floor
A UK slot spin must last at least 2.5 seconds and you have to start each one yourself. Megaways cascades already stretch a winning spin past that floor, so a chain of cascades on a UK build runs noticeably slower than on an offshore build, where turbo and autoplay are still offered.
Megaways games with a British following
UK interest in Megaways leans heavily towards games from British studios. Blueprint has its base in Newark and Barcrest in Manchester, while Inspired supplies UK bookmakers and arcades. That is why Centurion, Cops N Robbers, Eye of Horus, Fishin' Frenzy and Rainbow Riches all have Megaways versions with a ready-made audience: players recognise them from the cabinets in the high street shop.

The RTP column shows the studio's published default. Casinos can load a different certified version, and an offshore casino does not have to say which one it chose. Only the paytable inside the game describes the copy you are spinning.
Reading the ways count as a volatility gauge
Players tend to treat 117,649 as part of the Megaways name. In practice the number depends on how tall each reel can grow. Blueprint keeps several of its games on a shorter grid, with reels capped at five symbols. The maximum for Eye of Horus Megaways is 15,625, and for Fishin' Frenzy Megaways it is 15,615.
Pragmatic Play went the other way with Buffalo King Megaways, which uses a wider layout and reaches 200,704 ways.
At the same RTP, the 15,625-way game tends to pay smaller amounts more often, and the 200,704-way game tends to go quiet for longer and pay bigger when it lands. Neither is the better deal. They suit different bankrolls, and the UK stake cap makes the wilder shape harder to sit through at a sensible bet size.
Rainbow Riches Megaways and the build question
Barcrest certifies Rainbow Riches Megaways in more than one configuration, and published figures for the game range from 94.3% to 96.00% depending on which version a source looked at. Nobody is misreporting. The casino picks which certified build to load, and the figure you see in a review is whichever build that reviewer happened to open.
UK-licensed casinos have to show the RTP of the version they run. Offshore casinos carry no such duty. That tells you nothing about whether a given offshore site runs a lower build. It does mean you should check instead of assuming: open the game, tap the info or paytable button and go to the final page. The figure printed there applies to the copy in front of you.
Putting a price on the gap. £1 a spin for 3,000 spins is £3,000 staked. At 94.3% you would expect to lose about £171 over that session. At 96.00% the expected loss is £120. The difference is £51 on the same game, set by a choice the casino made. Try your own stake in the RTP cost calculator, and see the RTP guide for where the figure hides.
Picking a site for Megaways
Once the game checks out, the operator is the next thing to look at. The features that make offshore Megaways attractive come bundled with protections you no longer have.
- Check the provider filter. If Big Time Gaming, Blueprint or Pragmatic Play are missing, the lobby's headline game count will not help you.
- Read the withdrawal and verification terms first. Offshore casinos usually ask for documents when you cash out, not when you sign up. KYC at offshore casinos explains what is typically requested.
- Look at country restrictions. If the terms exclude the UK, playing through a VPN can lead to a closed account and a withheld balance. Our VPN page covers the clauses involved.
- Understand what GamStop does. How GamStop works sets out the scheme. If you registered because gambling had become a problem, leave the exclusion in place; GamCare offers free support on 0808 8020 133.
Five checks before the first spin
- Read the RTP from the last page of the paytable, because that is the version you are playing.
- Look up the maximum ways. A 15,625-way game and a 200,704-way game behave differently at the same RTP.
- Note the top win multiplier and treat it as a sign of volatility rather than a goal.
- If a feature buy is offered, work out its price in stakes. Up to about 100× is normal for the studio; much higher points to the operator.
- Read the operator's withdrawal terms and our rating method before you deposit.
