What Does No Wagering Mean?

Published October 2026

A no wagering bonus is one where whatever you win from it is yours to withdraw, without first having to stake it a set number of times. That single difference makes it the most valuable kind of casino offer, and it is why a small wager-free deal so often beats a headline figure many times larger.

Offer one needs £8,000 staked before anything can be withdrawn. At a typical 96% return, putting £8,000 through slots costs about £320 on average, which is more than the bonus itself. Most people who take it lose the balance partway through, which is exactly what the sums predict.

Offer two is £20 you can cash out. It is a tenth of the size and worth more.

A formula for valuing any offer

One sum lets you compare any two bonuses, with or without wagering:

What it is worth = bonus amount minus (amount you must stake × house edge)

OfferBonusMust stakeExpected cost at a 4% edgeWhat it is worth
£20 with no wagering£20£0£0£20
£50 at 20×£50£1,000£40£10
£100 at 35×£100£3,500£140Minus £40
£200 at 40× deposit plus bonus (£200 deposit)£200£16,000£640Minus £440
10% weekly cashbackVaries£0£0All of it

Two of those offers are worth less than nothing: clearing them is expected to cost more than they pay. They still get advertised because a large number in a banner brings in deposits, whatever it turns out to be worth.

Where wagering stops making sense

At a 4% house edge, a bonus only holds positive value while the multiplier on the bonus alone stays under about 25×. Above that, the expected cost of the required staking is bigger than the bonus.

A game with a smaller edge moves that line. On a 96.5% slot it sits closer to 28×. Table games like blackjack would push it much higher, which is exactly why most bonus terms count blackjack at 5% to 10% of its stake, or exclude it entirely.

How to tell a genuine wager-free offer

Casinos use the phrase loosely, so check the terms for these points:

The shapes a wager-free offer comes in

Cashback

A share of your net losses over a period, usually a week, paid back as cash. For someone who plays most weeks, this tends to be worth more over a year than any one-off welcome deal.

Rakeback

A slice of the house edge returned on everything you stake, win or lose. It accrues continuously and has no playthrough attached, which makes it the strongest structure for a regular player.

Wager-free spins

Free spins where the winnings land as cash. Expect small numbers, often ten to twenty spins, because the casino carries the cost straight away instead of hiding it behind a playthrough.

Free bets

On sites with a sportsbook, a stake on a sports market paid for by the operator. Check whether the stake itself comes back with a win (it usually does not) and whether winnings are paid as cash.

Rakeback in pounds

Rakeback is easy to underrate because the percentages look small, so put numbers on it. A 10% rakeback returns a tenth of the house edge on every stake. With a house edge of 4%, you get back 0.4% of everything you stake, taking the effective edge from 4% down to 3.6%.

Staked in a monthExpected cost at 4%With 10% rakebackDifference
£1,000£40£36£4
£5,000£200£180£20
£20,000£800£720£80
£50,000£2,000£1,800£200

Small for occasional players, more meaningful for regular ones. The real strength is that rakeback has no expiry, no playthrough and no stake cap to break, so there is no clause that can take it back.

Cashback small print

Why operators make these offers smaller

A wagering requirement lets a casino advertise a large figure while paying out a small one, and the gap between them is margin. A wager-free offer has no gap, so the casino keeps it smaller. That is a fair trade: what you see is what you can collect.

The one case for a big matched bonus. If you were going to stake a large amount anyway, a matched bonus carrying a small multiplier (no more than 25× the bonus, cleared on a low volatility slot) can be worth more in pounds. Only rely on that if you are sure the volume was coming regardless.

Examples from the sites we list

You will find wager-free structures more often at offshore casinos than at UK-licensed ones, mostly because crypto casinos compete on cashback and rakeback rather than on headline match percentages.

Maxxed, our top pick, lets new players pick one of three welcome packs: free spins, a free bet or cashback, with no wagering and a 7-day window to use it. Stake runs no fixed welcome match and puts its value into rakeback. Gamdom advertises rakeback that rises with your level. Terms change, so read the current version on each site before you deposit.

Why big banners persist

Huge headline bonuses survive because they work as advertising. A 500% match pulls in more sign-ups than a modest weekly cashback, even when the cashback would pay you more. Casinos are well aware which offer is worth more. They advertise whichever one people click.

It follows that any comparison ranking casinos by bonus size is ranking them by the figure least connected to what you will actually receive. How we rate casinos explains what we weigh instead.

A checklist for any offer

  1. Run the formula above before accepting. If the answer is below zero, say no.
  2. If you play often, favour recurring cashback and rakeback over one-off welcome matches.
  3. Taking a matched bonus? Look for 25× or lower, counted on the bonus amount only.
  4. Find the cap on winnings. Whatever the banner promises, a capped offer is worth that cap at most.
  5. Remember that declining is always allowed. Money with no conditions attached beats most bonuses you will be offered.
